VirtualBox 2.1.4 with Jaunty and Guest Addons

Seems that there is an issue with VirtualBox Guest Addons and Jaunty. The VirtualBox video driver will not install with the latest release of X. So what I did was extract the .run file:

# sh VBoxLinuxAdditions-*.run --target foo

This will extract the binary file into the directory foo. Once that is done I go into the foo directory and edit the install.sh file.

# cd foo/
# vi install.sh

Instead of using vi use your preferred text editor. Next thing you want to do is search for the number 1.6. In vi, that would be /1\.6. Once you have found that, you will see something like 1.5.99.* | 1.6 ). Change the 1.6 to 1.6.0, save the changes, exit out of your text editor and then run the install.sh file:

# sudo ./install.sh

This should now go through and install the guest addons so you can have good video graphics instead of the 800×600 vesa garbage. Hope this helps people. Thanks to those on IRC who helped figure this one out.

Edit: Someone just pointed out THIS LINK to the VirtualBox forums that states the same exact thing.

What my 12.5 year old daughter loves

Adding my 2 cents into the ongoing what my daughter loves meme.

  • Family (BIG TIME)
  • Her PINK cell phone
  • Her PINK netbook
  • Her little PINK game thing (I forget which one it is)
  • Her Wii
  • Her PINK iPoop ๐Ÿ™
  • Her cats (who unfortunately are not PINK)
  • and boys ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ™

Hey, you other old farts out there with soon-to-be teenage daughters or teenage dauthers, please give me some advice ๐Ÿ™‚

Edit: I am not implying that Liz is my 12.5 year old daughter with all of the PINK links above, they just have all of the same toys in all of the same colors. ๐Ÿ™‚

LoCo Teams

As some of you may know, I am currently working on a LoCo Directory that will eventually replace the LoCo Team List as it is a mess. The LoCo Directory will of course provide way more functionality in future releases. Right now what some of us have done is broken down the data in that team list and created a CSV file that can be imported into the database. The problem I am coming across is that some of the data is either wrong or out dated. Because of this, I have a simple request for LoCo Team Contacts and Leaders.

Could you please email me with the following information:

  • Launchpad ID (the part after ~ in the URL)
  • Country
  • State/Region/Province (if applicable)
  • City (if applicable)
  • Wiki Page
  • Website
  • Mailing List URL
  • Forum URL
  • Email Address
  • IRC Channel
  • Provides Support (Yes or No)
  • Approved (Yes or No)
  • Date Approved (If you are approved, when did it happen?
  • Contact(s) Launchpad ID (the part after ~ in the URL, separated by commas)

The following is an example that I would provide for the Chicago Team:

Launchpad ID: ubuntu-chicago
Country: United States
State/Region/Province: Illinois
City: Chicago
Wiki Page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ChicagoTeam
Website: http://chi.ubuntu-us.org
Mailing List URL: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-us-chicago
Forum URL: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=247
Email Address: ubuntu-us-chicago at ubuntu dot com
IRC Channel: #ubuntu-chicago
Provides Support: Yes
Approved: Yes
Date Approved: 2006/07/16
Contact(s) Launchpad ID: nixternal, jwcampbell

If you could, please send this to ‘nixternal at ubuntu dot com‘ ASAP I would greatly appreciate it. This will help me to establish a solid initial release, without this information we will have a bad implementation with bad data, and I would really like to prevent that. Thanks!
